The campus is closed only in severe weather. If it becomes necessary to change school operating schedules due to weather or other conditions, we will utilize local media to notify staff, faculty and students. Please bear in mind that it may not always be possible to get word out as rapidly as we might like, but the announcement to cancel classes or to delay the start of classes will be made approximately at 5:00 am. Announcements on campus closings/delays will be made on the stations listed below. See here for an up-to-date list of frequencies for WPSU in your area:
Note: Please do not call the radio stations; just listen for the announcement. If there is no announcement, assume the campus is open and classes will be held as usual. The following television stations will also announce closures: WTAJ-TV, WJAC-TV, WPSX-TV If weather conditions are very serious, a media announcements will be made that classes for the day (including evening classes) and all scheduled events will be canceled. All administrative offices will be closed as well. If only one day of classes is missed during a semester due to a campus closing, instructors are asked to make up missed classes at their discretion, making their own arrangements with their students. If classes or rooms need to be scheduled for makeup purposes, please notify the registrar. If the campus cancels more than one day during the semester, the campus administration will determine how to make up those missed classes. If you hear that classes will be delayed two hours this means that we will delay the beginning of most classes for two hours and compress those class periods. In general, 50 minute periods will become 40 minutes with a 5 minute break between periods, and 75 minute periods will become 65 minute periods with a 5 minute break between periods. Please refer to the timetable below for specific times for your classes. Lab instructors will need to adjust their schedules to reflect such time compression. Compressed schedule times for classes that do not start/end at times listed under "normal schedule" are to be determined by the instructor. Staff Delay Policy When we created the compressed schedule for classes we decided that staff should follow this policy. Any time there is a delay, staff should also begin at 10:00 since the campus will be considered closed until then. If classes are cancelled and the campus is still open then staff should make an effort to come in. If they choose not to they will have to use a vacation day but they will not be penalized by their supervisor because they chose not to come in. We will understand if they are afraid to drive on the roads. If the campus is closed staff are not to report to work and will not be charged for a vacation day. Wage payroll employees however will not be paid for the day unless they choose to use some of their earned time credit. Also see Human Resources Guideline No.10, "Handling 'Weather Day' Absences or Official University Closedowns Due to Weather Conditions."
Also see below, Reporting Absences.
Reporting Absences If a faculty member must cancel a class and knows this ahead of time, that faculty member should notify his/her students about this. If last-minute driving conditions prevent a faculty member from coming to campus, please use a telephone chain to notify students. On days the campus is open, a faculty member must notify the Academic Affairs office (call Chris Klinger at 814-375-4770) if unable to meet classes, whether to attend professional meetings or because of personal reasons, so that appropriate signs can be posted saying that class has been canceled, and giving any assignments that students should have. If you need to report your absence from class, please do not call the main DuBois Campus number. Since the implementation of campus voice mail, it is now better for you to leave someone a voice mail message. Follow the procedures listed below.
