Mechanical Engineering courses lead toward Penn State degree

8/1/2006 —

Clearfield – Beginning this fall, credit certificate courses offered by Penn State DuBois at Clearfield Area High School can lead to an associate degree in engineering technology offered at Penn State University.

In response to an anticipated need for mechanical engineers in Clearfield County, Penn State DuBois is offering courses that can be applied to a Mechanical Engineering Technology certificate. The 15-credit certificate program provides skills in engineering fundamentals, mathematics, drawing, computer-aided drafting, manufacturing process, materials, analysis and evaluation.

According to Diana Ricotta, Assistant Director of Continuing Education at Penn State DuBois, this fall, three courses will be offered at Clearfield High School toward the Basic Mechanical Engineering Technology certification: Technical Drawing Fundamentals, Thursdays between Sept. 5 and Oct. 17, from 5:50-9:30 p.m.; Introduction to Computer-Aided Drafting, Thursdays between Oct. 24 and Dec. 19, from 5:50-9:30 p.m.; and Engineering Technology Orientation, Tuesdays from 5:50-7:30 p.m.

"These are basic engineering technology courses that can be applied to any of our engineering programs," Ricotta said. "The training is appropriate for both the novice, who wants to get into the field, and the veteran, who needs to update some skills to adapt to changing technologies."

The courses are scheduled in the evenings, to accommodate non-traditional students, or adult learners, who must also balance a full-time job and family obligations. All classes will be held at Clearfield Area High School. In anticipation of the interest from adult learners in the Clearfield area, Penn State DuBois Adult Student Coordinator Scott Yeager will be available to talk to potential students at the Clearfield Career Link Center, 1125 Linden St., every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Yeager can also be reached by phone at (814)375-4759.
