PSU DuBois Concert Features Ancient Music

11/22/2005 —

DuBois - The instrumental trio "Ornamental Nuance" will perform "Holiday Music through the Ages," part of Penn State DuBois' cultural event series, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at Hiller Auditorium. Admission is free, but advanced tickets are required and can be reserved by calling (814)375-4766.

"Holiday Music through the Ages" celebrates seasonal music from a pre-Renaissance era to the present time and promises to be a "different" type of Christmas program, according to Paul Fehrenbach, Ph.D., who is the ensemble director.

"Many of the more obscure holiday songs written and arranged for unusual instrumental and vocal ensembles will be featured," Fehrenbach said.

Instrumental music will be performed on flute, oboe, English horn, classical guitar, quinton, violin, viola, and bagpipes. Vocal music will also be featured with guest singers and the DuBois Campus Concert Choir. The group is from the DuBois area and consists of Fehrenbach of Kersey on guitar and Quinton; Brian Simpson, Emporium, on oboe and English horn; and Kristina Keith, Brockway, on flute.

Fehrenbach is an instructor of music and integrated arts at Penn State DuBois. He received his bachelor's degree in English literature form Kutztown University, a master's degree in music composition from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, and a doctoral degree in music education from Penn State University.

Simpson is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania/West Penn Hospital of Respiratory Care and is currently employed at Elk Regional Health Center as a respiratory therapist.

Keith is a 2002 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a bachelor of science in music education. While attending IUP, she participated in numerous ensembles including concert band, symphony band, orchestra, university chorus, chorale, marching band and various flute ensembles. She teaches music in the DuBois Area School District.
