Sueann Doran Named Penn Stater of the Quarter
Sueann Doran, coordinator of the Kids in College program, has been named Penn Stater of the Quarter for April through June at Penn State DuBois.
The award, given to a member of the faculty, staff, or student body each quarter, recognizes individuals who serve the University above and beyond what is required. Honorees are nominated and selected by their peers.
“Every year as the program coordinator for Kids in College, Sueann dedicates herself to serving the children of our community,” wrote Director of Continuing Education John D. Piccolo, who nominated Doran for the award. “Her many contributions greatly influenced the campus and the surrounding community,” Piccolo said of the latest Kids in College campaign.
The Kids in College program offers more than 50 classes, from “Understanding the
Shadow” to “Constructing Giant Hover Crafts.” Children from kindergarten through ninth grade participate in the event, often totaling over 500 students each summer session.
As coordinator of the program, Doran’s responsibilities are numerous. Starting in January and concluding in July, Doran advertises, recruits instructors, and coordinates classes.
Doran attended PSU DuBois, receiving her Associate of Business degree in 1999, and was hired as the Kids in College Coordinator in May of 2001.
Doran’s daughter, Jessie, has also participated in the Kids in College program, first as a student and then as an assistant. “It seemed each year she was taking fewer classes and helping more,” Doran said. For her volunteer efforts, Chancellor Anita McDonald, presented Jessie the first “Junior Penn Stater of the Quarter” award.
In addition to her responsibilities as the Kids in College Coordinator, Doran is highly influential in the maintenance and success of the Continuing Education department.
Doran “has willingly taken on additional responsibility,” wrote Piccolo. “Sueann is an incredibly valued team member who has helped keep the Continuing Education department together during times of great change.”
Doran deals with both credit and non-credit program support, including marketing, advertising, and web-page development.
Furthermore, when the marketing coordinator is unavailable, Doran undertakes the responsibility of coordinating active projects.
“Sueann is a role model for every staff member,” Piccolo continued. “Her positive attitude, willingness to pitch in, and reliability make her an outstanding Penn Stater.”
