Penn State DuBois Women Look Forward to Season
The Penn State DuBois women’s basketball team, coming off a (14-12) season, enters the 2011-12 schedule with high expectations. Several returning key players from last year's successful run are joined by an influx of a few talented freshmen to fuel these expectations.
Leading the charge of the Lady Lions this year will be senior guard, Tessa Vargas (Sheffield / Sheffield, PA). At the guard spot, the team’s leading scorer from last year will be joined by senior Beth Pernesky (DuBois CC / Falls Creek, PA), sophomore Lauren Topolski (Cameron County / Emporium, PA) as well as Kyley Mickle (Port Allegany / Port Allegany, PA). Sophomore Lynnie Schirmer (Clarion-Limestone / Summerville, PA) and Freshman Karley Carnovale (Elk County / Kersey, PA) will be sharing time while directing the offense from the point guard position.
The frontcourt will boast the return of last year’s top rebounders, sophomores Kelsey Rini (East Forest / Marianville, PA) and Patience McCullough (Purchase Line / Cherry Tree, PA). Joining them down low will be sophomore Karlee Cyphert (North Clarion / Leeper, PA) who led last year's team with over one hundred assists and PA All-State third team selection small forward, and Jenna Matzinger (Coudersport / Coudersport, PA).
Fifth year head coach Pat Lewis said he is happy with early season workouts. On his outlook for the upcoming season, he states, "We had a very respectable showing in our scrimmage against Clarion University last week where we showed a strong ability to score points against a strong Division II program." He adds, "We have advanced to the PSUAC three out of the past four seasons and would like to do so once again. We believe that we have the strength and depth this year to advance deeper into the playoffs and hopefully secure a national bid in the USCAA."
The Lady Lions open their home schedule against Pitt-Titusville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22.
